DNA of Thomas Sullivan Barren County Kentucky & his Skaggs connection - Are they related?

The SULLIVAN family & The SKAGGS

The Mysterious DNA of Thomas Sullivan & his unknown wife:

Welcome! Today we are going to look at the DNA of Thomas Sullivan (Barren county, Kentucky) and his wife. Could they be connected to the Skaggs family? I also take a look at some of the other families living around Thomas. We want to find out as much as we can about Thomas Sullivan and his wife even if it involves a process of elimination. We also want to investigate why their grandson, Alfred Sullivan, has a male descendant who has Skagg's Y-DNA R-BY44771 and NOT Sullivan Y-DNA.

A Background refresher on Thomas Sullivan & family.

In my previous post, "Seperating the TWO Thomas Sullivans", I went over the facts surrounding Thomas Sullivan, who was part of the Mill Creek Baptist Church, a.k.a Mulkey Meeting House, located in what was Barren County, Kentucky, current day Monroe County, Kentucky. I show proof researchers have confused him with a Thomas Sullivan in Anne Arundel, Maryland, married to William Wood's daughter, Sarah Wood. I share the court documentsproving that the Thomas Sullivan of Anne Arundel, MD, died in 1810. In his estate, it states that he owed money on the late William Wood's land. Also, his wife, Sarah, hands over administration duties to her son, William.

With the undeniable proof that the Anne Arundel, MD Thomas was dead in 1810, we know he cannot be the Thomas Sullivan who was still alive in Barren County, Kentucky.

Thomas Sullivan of Barren County was granted land in 1798 and became a member of the Mill Creek Baptist Church. He lived in Barren County until 1815, if not slightly longer. He was also in each years tax records for Barren County and was part of the Cornstalk Militia in 1813.  In 1815, Thomas sold his land to Roden Thompson. Previous to 1798, Thomas was living in Cocke County, Tennessee and was a member of the Big Pigeon Baptist Church. In 1820, Thomas is still alive, found in the Wayne County, Indiana U.S. Census, living next door to two of his daughters and their husbands, Charles Vincent and James Compton. Those two daughters have marriage records in the Mill Creek Baptist Church. Both married by Rev. John Mulkey. John Mulkey was the founder of the Mill Creek Baptist Church, he had come from the Big Pigeon Church in Cocke County, Tennessee.

THE DNA RESEARCH

A Large section of the DNA research below was run inside Ancestry.com’s DNA system. That meets the standard of 8 cM and over in matching DNA cousins. Some of my research below also uses Gedmatch to run some DNA matches below the 8 cM threshold. Many researchers believe anything below 8 cM is not reliable data. Some researchers believe you can still utilize lower cM data, if you look for a pattern of DNA in conjunction with other factors. Do all the matches who are lower cM land in the same chromosome and segment areas as one another? Do they land with a higher cM person from this same line? Did these families have close proximity to one another? And so on.

One example of lower cM DNA: Thomas Sullivan’s male descendant via his son, Thomas Sullivan Jr. This descendant did his DNA in Ancestry.com. He does NOT show up as a match to the descendant of Thomas Sullivan Jr’s sibling in the Ancestry database. He falls below their standard cM threshold. However, 2 females from the same Thomas Sullivan Jr. do show up as DNA matches at 10 cM. Does that mean we just toss this Male Sullivan out? Luckily, we have his Gedmatch number. He does indeed match on an area of a chromosome where other Thomas Sullivan descendants land but at a low 6.3 cM. He could still be of value running him on his own to check for Sullivan and related DNA. This is also a good thing to do to make sure the cM isn’t low for an unforeseen reason.

We know Thomas Sullivan’s grandson’s direct male line is Skaggs Y-DNA. We also know the Sullivan and Skaggs families did indeed have close proximity to one another. We are working at a 5th Great Grandparent generational level in which Autosomal DNA naturally drops off and can be unreliable. Again, knowing this we proceed with caution.

Questions?

Could Alfred have been another family member's child they simply adopted? This is something that could happen if a parent were to pass away. Or does Alfred simply have an “N.P.E”? Are the Sullivan’s or Thomas Sullivan’s wife related to the Skaggs or someone that married into the Skaggs line causing the DNA to be shared?

Goal:

Run Skaggs DNA even if it falls below 7cM.

Look for a pattern of DNA.

Decide if you want to consider this something to look into further.

If there is indeed a pattern (the same chromosomes in the same segment areas as one another). Then look at which couples are showing up the most. Does it point to one single couple? If it looks like siblings from the same line, then we need to look at the generation prior to them and so on. If other lines that are not Skaggs land with them, can we find existing genealogically proven lines that might make sense of these families mixing? Or has there been previous DNA studies done linking the two families.

Bottom line is, my goal today isn't to prove the Sullivan’s are related to the Skaggs but to examine if it is an avenue to consider.

So, What do we know about Thomas's grandson,
Alfred Sullivan?

Alfred Sullivan is claimed to have been born 1811 in Barren County, Kentucky, his father is hypothesized to be "Daniel Sullivan" and his mother is "Esther Lytle". In my research, I question what is thought to be known about Alfred's parents. Researchers assumed Daniel Sullivan, found living in Green County, Kentucky in 1805, was Thomas's son and Alfred's father, however, he is not! That Daniel Sullivan married Jane Settle on August 3rd, 1787, in King George County, Virginia. He had his first land grant in Green County, KY, 1805, on Russells Creek. He has records that are easy to follow in Green County and his wife Jane is included in Deeds. So, he is not the man who married Esther, nor is he the age of a son to Thomas. He is the age of a brother or a 1st cousin to Thomas. There are no other mentions of any other Daniel Sullivan in these two counties during this time period. Some have speculated Alfred's father is a Daniel Sullivan found in Vincennes, Knox County, Indiana. That Daniel Sullivan again is too old to be a son of Thomas. That Daniel also has an easily traceable history. He also appears to have had a son Daniel. So the second Daniel would not fit either. So the search for Daniel continues.

Let's talk about Alfred's mother, Esther
, she is only seen one time in any record for Barren County, KY. That record is the member list for the Mill Creek Baptist as "Esther Sullivan" date noted as  "before 1798". In that church list the same date is written for Sarah Sullivan and Thomas Sullivan. One would assume Esther would be related to Thomas and Sarah in some way. We have never found a single document proving Esther had a maiden name of "Lytle", it is speculation as she had a 2nd great grandchild middle named "Lytle". I was able to find on the opposite side of that grandchild's tree, the "non-Esther" side, the name "Lytle" was used for some middle names. So it would be hard to say what side of the tree that name was coming from. One court document I found could place a Lytle on the scene in conjunction with a Skaggs: An 1803 deed for land along Russells Creek, owned by William Skaggs. Remember Russell creek was also where Daniel Sullivan & wife Jane (Settle) had land. William Skaggs had land once owned by Robert Todd. Robert Todd, was deceased and a group of survey trustees out of Fayette County, Kentucky, that included William Lytle and John Lytle, were assigned. I have yet to find out more about those two Lytle men. In a separate document, I found a Martin Little that married Polly Russell listed on same page that James Compton and Elizabeth Sullivan's marriage is on. I still need to investigate this. Important note: the AI search engine for Familysearch.org is confusing the name "Settle" for  "Little".

Now, here is a whopper of a catch I didn't see coming
until I started to look at the DNA.

The descendants of Thomas Sullivan match DNA
 to the descendants of
Esther "Lytle" and her 2nd husband, James McMurray.

This DNA was run using matches found inside Ancestry.com’s DNA database and run within Ancestry.com itself. This data meets the standard cM threshold.

How are the descendants of Esther "Lytle" and her 2nd husband, James McMurray, matching DNA to the descendants of Thomas Sullivan if there is no male Sullivan DNA? Could Esther have actually been a Sullivan herself? What if everything we thought we knew about Esther was wrong? What if she were Thomas Sullivan's daughter and simply had a Skaggs son? What if there wasn't actually a husband Daniel? Who started the Daniel Sullivan theory anyway? Or do the Thomas Sullivan descendants simply match a part of McMurray's line or a line that married in to the children of Esther, or is Esther a Lytle and they match that line?? I mean it is a real mystery that I will continue to relentlessly unravel.

Below:
One of the Esther "Lytle" and James McMurray descendants and
their DNA match to 2 of the Thomas Sullivan descendants in Ancestry.com

THE DNA CHART of THOMAS SULLIVAN

Below are the Descendants of Thomas Sullivan that I was able to locate matching DNA to. Some are from Gedmatch and some of them were found in Ancestry.com's DNA. Three from Ancestry DNA unfortunately do not have Gedmatch kits to run.

Thomas Sullivan, is a 5th Great Grandfather for most of these descendants, and we are using Autosomal DNA for this research. Some of the DNA cM value is low. I would like to attribute this to the genetic range of this DNA. However, we really don't know every detail about Thomas's life, could some of his children be half siblings?, etc. Are there any non-paternal events "N.P.E's" happening?, etc.

Let's take a look at:
the Skaggs links to the Sullivan family without DNA

Thomas Sullivan sold his land in Barren County, Kentucky to Roden Thompson. That deed was witnessed by Samuel Marrs. According to Wikitree, Samuel Marrs had been married to the sister of Roden Thompson, Lydia Thompson. Lydia had passed away in 1814. In Nov of 1815, Sarah Sullivan was granted money in the support of Samuel Marrs heirs. Roden and Lydia were the children of Archibald Thompson and Mary (Elswick) Thompson. Archibald's two sisters, Mary and Lucy Thompson married Skaggs brothers, Henry and Charles. The Skaggs brothers are carrying the same Y-DNA as Alfred Sullivan's male line. This does not mean one of those brothers are his father but it does mean someone in their family line is. Archibald Thompson kept a diary, in it he has the Skaggs family and also "Jeams Cumpton". I believe "Jeams Cumpton" is James Compton who married Elizabeth Sullivan, Thomas Sullivan's daughter.

James Compton, Thomas Sullivan’s son-in-law:

James Compton married Thomas Sullivan’s daughter, Elizabeth Sullivan, June 18, 1800 in Barren County, Kentucky. Many researchers do not seem to know who James Compton’s parents are. I found a court document in Barren County, dated: 19 Feb. 1796. In this Indenture, James Compton of Green County, Kentucky volunteers and has his mother’s consent to be an apprentice of Eli Bull. James will learn the trade of spinning wheel making. Signers: Eli Bull, James Compton and Margaret Aston (Margaret is James Compton’s mother, who researchers claim has the maiden name of Reamer) Witnesses to this Indenture are: William Aston (Margaret’s 2nd Husband), Joshua Phipps & Esther Phipps

I believe the James Compton from the Indenture is the same James Compton who married Thomas Sullivan’s daughter. The fact that Roden Thompson bought Thomas Sullivan’s land, Roden’s father, Archibald Thompson, kept a diary that included the Skaggs and Compton families. The Comptons and the Skaggs married into the Thompson family. Also, according to some researchers, a Margaret “Peggy” Compton married David Skaggs, son of Henry Skaggs and Martha Thompson, the aunt of Roden. In Archibald’s diary he notes the following: In Jan 1802 Richard Cumpton made a loom for Roseanny Thompson. Catty Cumpton (Compton) married Ratliff Thompson 1802. (Margaret Aston & Wm Aston give ok to marry.

After James Compton marries Elizabeth Sullivan, he is found on land near Henry Skaggs on the East Fork of Barren River, on the tax list for Jun 1806 for Barren County, Kentucky.

Below is an interesting bio for James Compton's sister, Margaret Reamer Compton Skaggs Cannon, named after her mother.

 the following was written:

“Margaret (Peggy) Raemer Compton was born between 1758-1760 in Virginia. She was a daughter of John Compton and Margaret Raemer. She married David Skaggs abt 1787 in Russell County, Virginia. There were 8 children born to this marriage.

Taylor Co., Kentucky Circuit Bundle #28 1857, Margaret Skaggs Canon vs. Lucinda Skaggs, Exec. of John C. Skaggs.

Margaret Cannon states that she recovered a judgment against John C. Skaggs in 1853 for a note dated 1840. No execution was issued on the judgment and no part has ever been paid. Since then, John C. Skaggs departed this life in Taylor County, leaving a will. Margaret has presented the note to the defendant but she refused to pay it. She had enough assets to pay it.

Lucinda Skaggs states that she knows nothing of the judgment in the petition and she didn't know that plaintiff had ever obtained a judgment until now She states that many years ago, Margaret held a note on her husband, J. C Skaggs and Jesse Roberts. Half of the note was paid by Roberts. The other half was paid by J. C. Skaggs, son of Margaret, for taking care of her, furnishing wood, taking care of the farm of plaintiff, etc.

John took care of Margaret from the time of the note until about Christmas 1853 at which time he moved from the neighborhood. Upon checking the records, she found that no process had ever been served on her husband. It was rendered in 1853. The judgment was fraudulent and void. Margaret was then and still is indebted to her husband much larger than the note. John performed labor for her. She owes him $100 and she is insolvent. Lucinda asks for a transfer of the equity side of the docket to set aside judgment. Margaret Cannon states that she is not and never was indebted to defendant for $100 or any other sum for taking care of her. Margaret states that John C. never took care of her and Jesse Roberts never paid half of the note. She took it to court in March 1853 and the court ordered it paid, but it wasn't. The judgment was not obtained by fraud. No Results given

I am rather confident that my GGGGgrandmother, Margaret "Peggy," (ca. 1758-1860) wife of David Skaggs, was also a daughter of John Compton and Margaret Raemer. David Skaggs was the son of the Long Hunter, Henry Skaggs, and his wife, Mary Thompson. This would have made Ratliff Thompson and David Skaggs first cousins - and married to sisters. Margaret "Peggy" Raemer Compton Aston lived to be quite old and I have found where Margaret Skaggs was paid by the Green County court to care for her. This is what led me to believe that this is probably her mother. I suspect that David Skaggs and Margaret Compton married in Russell County, Virginia about 1787. Their son, Henry Skaggs, was married to a Momon in Missouri. Also, one of the sons of David and Margaret Skaggs was named John C. Skaggs. I think his name was John Compton Skaggs...after his maternal grandfather. - Jeremy Johnson

A Skaggs / McMurray / Odell family link

In 1860, there is a census for Celia Scaggs in Osage Township, Crawford Co, MO

Celia Scaggs surname is seen as Scaggs & Skaggs. She had married James Skaggs in Green County, Kentucky in 8 October 1819. Green county was once part of Barren County, Kentucky, where Thomas Sullivan  and his son in law James McMurray once lived. Celia was born in Green County, Kentucky according to Findagrave , it states her maiden name was also Scaggs. As we know, one of Thomas Sullivan's daughters married Gabriel Odell. One of Celia and James Skagg's sons, James Holbert Skaggs, married Julia A. Odell. Julia was the 1st cousin 1x removed of Gabriel Odell.

In the 1860 census below: Celia Skaggs has a McMurray family living with her.

James Skaggs was the son of James Skaggs Sr and Nancy Mayes.

On this 1860 census, Celia is head of household.
Sex Female, Age 61, Birth Year (Estimated) 1799, Birthplace: Kentucky, Race: White

In her household:

Thos J Scaggs :
M 18 Missouri
Jas F Scaggs:
M 16 Missouri
Celia Toadvine:
F 16 Missouri
(Celia Toadvine was her Granddaughter)

Henry W Brazziel:
M 22 Indiana
(Henry was adopted by the Skaggs / Scaggs and brought to Missouri.
It is of interest that Henry was born in Indiana.
Our Sullivan & McMurrays moved to Indiana)

James McMurray:
M 27 Kentucky
(This is not our James McMurray, who married Esther Lytle. M.
Could they be related however?)
Sarah T McMurray:
F 6 Missouri
Nancy L McMurray:
F 4 Missouri

Who else was Thomas Sullivan around that might be potential DNA family for he and his wife?

So, we know there is shared DNA between the descendants of the Skaggs families and the Thomas Sullivan descendants. We know Alfred Sullivan's line is Male Skaggs Y-DNA. The other Thomas Sullivan descendants share DNA to Skaggs as well but also show a Sullivan connection to Darby Sullivan III who married Anne Fugate and other Sullivan lines, what does it mean for them? Is there something we don't know about the Sullivan line or is this a female line for them that is adding the DNA. It could represent a connection on Thomas's wife's side.

We know Thomas was probably from Virginia due to his land grants, likely he was born there. In an 1850 census, one of Thomas's children states they were born in Virginia. The first record we have for Thomas is in 1793, when he has a letter of recommendation to join the Big Pigeon Baptist Church, in what is now Cocke county, Tennessee. Thomas Sullivan's surname was seen in church records spelled several ways, including: Sulevent, Sylliven and Swilliven. One of Thomas's daughter's, Nancy Sullivan married Gabriel Odell, Gabiel's father was also a member of the church.

In 1793, A committee was formed to discuss Thomas Sullivan's admittance into the church "as there was some difficulty amongst some Members" upon consideration. The committee consisted of: Samuel Phares (Phares also known to be spelled Pharris, Ferris)William LillardJoshua Kelley, Jonathan NethertonGeorge McCownPeter Fine and Abram McKay. We do not know what the difficulty was in the decision, however, he was admitted as a member.

Samuel Phares (Pharris/Ferris) becomes the person of interest here, as his son-in-law, Thomas Mantooth / Monteith, nicknamed "Cherokee Tom", is also in the church. We have found matching DNA between Thomas Mantooth's descendants and the Thomas Sullivan descendants. So what do we know about Thomas Mantooth? I am going to use information here given to me by the past tribal historian of the Patawomeck Tribes, Bill Deyo. I have not personally done this genealogical work myself. I had reached out to Mr. Deyo after doing this DNA research, as he seemed to be the one who knew the most about Thomas Mantooth and Sullivan lines.

In the email Mr. Deyo states: "Ann Fugate would have a double kinship to Thomas Mantooth's family, as she had descents from Thomas Pettus and Ka-Okee through both parents." "Thomas Mantooth signed his name as "Manteeth" in the agreement with Samuel Phariss to marry his daughter in 1795.  Thomas was the son of John Monteith, son of Thomas Monteith and Phyllis Gallop (whose mother, Elinor Bryant, was a granddaughter of Keziah Arroyah)."

Thomas Sullivan is found several times in Big Pigeon church minutes, with no mention of his wife but there is a RACHEL SWILLIVEN as a member. I do not know more about Rachel. There is no Sarah Sullivan listed that I have found yet. Sarah doesn't show up until the Mill Creek Baptist Church membership.

Some families in the Big Pigeon Baptist Church, there at the time Thomas was a member, have ties to Darby Sullivan III and Ann Fugate. Some of those, we have found matching DNA to. That DNA seems to point back to a Fugate and a Bryant line. Those lines are said to be part of the Pamunkey / Patawomeck tribes in Virginia. I have found there is triangulation of DNA between the Thomas Sullivan descendants to Pamunkey enrolled tribal members and descendants of the Pamunkey / Patawomeck lines. There are Amerindian markers in some of those matching DNA triangulated areas. One area on chromosome 1 also houses a Clovis Anzick 1 DNA connection for some of the descendants of Thomas.

F999919 (Clovis Montana 12.5ky) 1 11029478 - 12183245 3.2 cM 233

The Sullivan line appears to have come from Ireland, so that line is not the source of Indigenous DNA. So this would be a female line connection. Ann Fugate is said to be descended from Anne of the Patawomeck per William Deyo. There was a DNA study done pertaining to Anne of the Patawomeck proving Anne existed and was indigenous. From the book: Anne of the Patawomeck: Wife of William Redmond & Dr. Richard Bryant, Descendants of the, famed or fabled, Ka-Okee, A Case Study, Part 1 by Crystal Toronyai Davis .

Youtube video by Crystal on Anne of the Patawomeck's DNA

A comparison below of the direct MALE SULLIVAN via Thomas Sullivan’s son Thomas Sullivan Jr and  the descendant of Thomas Sullivan’s daughter, Nancy Sullivan, using Dodecade World 9 admixture tool in Gedmatch.com.
RED markers represent Amerindian DNA.
They both carry the same marker on Chromosome 3 at 194M.
The Nancy Sullivan descendant is in the Native American DNA Study of the Virginias headed up by Crystal Toronyai Davis. That area of Chromosome 3 is considered an extension of Anne of the Patawomeck’s marker.  Anne was married to Richard Bryant.
These are the direct ancestors of Thomas Mantooth.

I have done much more work on the Amerindian markers, I will share in a future post.

Who are the

Their son James Skaggs Jr 1734 to son Jeremiah Skaggs 1760  & Rebecca Mayes. Then their son William Thomas Skaggs 1760 - 1860 Green Co, KY. These are the Skaggs that were by our Thomas Sullivan Sr in Barren Co, KY. Thomas sold his land to Roden Thompson whose two aunts married Skaggs brothers from James Skaggs 1700 - 1781 & Rachel unknown’s line. There was a Polly Harrison that came from the Mill Creek Baptist Church in Barren Co. She moved to Indiana and is found next door to Thomas Sullivan’s family in the 1820 Wayne County, Indiana census. Thomas's Grandson Sullivan carries the same male Y-DNA from this Skaggs line.

Thomas Sullivan Descendant via Nancy Sullivan Triangulated with

(H) Closest cousin with a tree is 158.5 cM Has William Yates 1762 Bedford Co, VA married Mary Polly Wimberly) triangulated (U) No tree. Looks like a lot of Spanish surnamed cousins.

Thomas Sullivan Descendant via Nancy Sullivan Triangulated with

(J) Wilson (has a Vincent born 1812 Indiana. Nothing is really known. Our Thomas Sullivan’s daughter Mary married a Charles Vincent. Also (J) Wilson has Thomas Sullivan 1770 who married Nancy Boswell. Charles co, Maryland. Son Richard married Penina Gibson 1794-1870 Stokes Co, NC. This Thomas Sullivan is in the same 1820 Stokes North Carolina census page as John L Sizemore (middle initial looks like an L) and William Sizemore. I have not looked into which Sizemores these are. My best guess is these Sullivans are from the same male Sullivan line as our Thomas. (J) Wilson triangulated with (X) Spiker (has No Tree. In his main Gedmatch page has a cousin at 87.8 cM. That cousin has Richard Bryant & Anne Meese, Elkins / Bryant. Elkins / Gallop / Doniphan lines. Dillon, Blankenship, Belcher line. Carpenter, Cornstalk, Moytoy lines. Cleopatra Powhatan line. Bowling, Rolfe, Pocahontas (Matoaka) son Thomas Rolfe line.

Thomas Sullivan Descendant via Nancy Sullivan Triangulated with

(I) Musick (Has a Vincent line which I am keeping track of as one of Thomas Sullivan’s daughters married a Charles Vincent. However, (I) Musick also has the James Skaggs line that is mentioned above. He is via James Skaggs 1700 - 1781 and Rachel Unknown, their son Charles Skaggs who married Lucy Thompson. Lucy was the aunt of Roden Thompson that bought our Thomas Sullivan’s land in Barren co, KY.  (I) Musick triangulated with (X) Spiker (has No Tree. In his main Gedmatch page has a cousin 87.8 cM. That cousin has Richard Bryant & Anne Meese, Elkins / Bryant. Elkins / Gallop / Doniphan lines. Dillon, Blankenship, Belcher line. Carpenter, Cornstalk, Moytoy lines. Cleopatra Powhatan line. Bowling, Rolfe, Pocahontas (Matoaka) son Thomas Rolfe line.

Thomas Sullivan Descendant via Nancy Sullivan Triangulated with

(L) (No tree. No close cousins with trees. Looks like a lot of Spanish names in his main Ged page.) triangulated with (Y) Buckley (has Lines: 2x to Darby Owen Sullivan III & wife Anne Fugate via sons Benjamin who married Susannah Kitchen and son Daniel Sullivan who married Mary Jett. The two sons children married one another. Those combined lines married into Shelton and Newton. The Newton line also makes Barbara a direct descendant of the Monteith / Mantooth / Bryant / Owens / Gallop / Redman line. That Monteith / Mantooth line is the same family that was in the Big Pigeon Baptist Church in Cocke Co, TN with our Thomas Sullivan. The Shelton line would also be part of (P) Shelton’s line who is also part of this triangulation on chromosome 8. (Y) Buckley also has a Fines line that married into Cox/Jett. William Deyo is 27 cM to (Y) Buckley

Thomas Sullivan Descendant via Nancy Sullivan Triangulated with

(G) Perez Sr: (Perez line is from Tlaxco, Jalisco Mexico 1834. Both sides of the tree are Mexico, many lines going into Uvaldi, Texas. The furthest line they have back in their tree is a second Perez line 1810 Saltillo, Coahuila de Zaragoza, Mexico.) triangulated (AA) Bryant (No tree. Has other Perez cousins but not (G) Perez SR in main gedmatch list. Many cousins from Mexico in list. Has a cousin at 29 cM with a Blankenship line).

“Edward "Ned" Mozingo[1] (born ca. 1644, died ca. 1712) might have been one of the earliest African-American indentured servants in the American colonies, with origins believed to be Angolan.[1] He first appeared in records in 1672 as an apprentice to Colonel John Walker, who had acquired Mozingo through his marriage to Sharon Fleet, the widow of Captain Henry Fleet. Captain Fleet was an explorer who settled in Jamestown after voyages on Lord Rich's ships, the Warwick and the Tiger, which operated along the West African coast and the West Indies in the 1620s and later.[2]”

Let’s wrap this up!

Some matching in Ancestry.com shows some Skaggs connections We also can see a pattern taking hold on a couple of chromosomes, however, there are some other families also landing there. With this information, I would want to take a bit more time researching these families genealogically and historically outside of DNA. Did any of these families commingle? What are their histories? Look at studies done on these families? Were there any illegitimate children? Or could this simply be an ancestor’s DNA they all share very far back in time? I’m not ready to rule out a connection but if it proves to go nowhere I will be the first to update and let you know!

Until next time.
Thank you for stopping by and please leave a comment below.
I’d love to hear from you!

Sunny :)
